THE SPIRIT OF HESSLE RD

History Of  The Pram Race

The race was originally called The Fish Dock Pram Race and was run on Fridays during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

The wives of Hull trawler men at sea would rush down west Dock Avenue to the Trawler owner’s offices to draw their men’s wages.

The race was revived in 1985 by Peter Nicholson who was the Director of Marsh Nicholson.  It was a great  opportunity to carry on the tradition from the 1930’s, at the same time promoting the business of Hessle Road.

The Race ran for many years  attracting thousands of people to the Hessle Road area.

In 2008 Peter Nicholson asked members of the community if they would help to revive the pram race.       Plans are in progress for a large scale,   fun event with the aim of bringing the   community together and to raise  funds for local projects.
