HESSLE ROAD CARNIVAL AND PRAM RACE 2009
It is very pleasing to report of the enormous success of the revival of the Pram Race. The community have been magnificent in welcoming back, with their support and enthusiasm, this nostalgic event. Even without the staggering amount of money raised the event would still have served its purpose as a catalyst for the nostalgia and happiness of the Hessle Road Community. First of all Our very generous sponsors who pledged early support to get us started; Arco, and Blinds & Nets, Blue Orchid, East Yorkshire Motor Services, Gateway, Graham's Florist, Frank Haslam Homes, Kamis Café, Kingston Cycles, KWL, A big thank you to Alfie Walsham at Constancia for his excellent commentary of the race, to Keren at Boyes for her wonderful window display, which brought back memories for many people, and to Hull City Council for maintenance of the prams. Also to the numerous donors who gave so generously and wish to remain anonymous, a special thank you for your fantastic contributions. So what was achieved? The initial sum raised was £25,000 of which £15,000 was allocated and awarded to 22 charities and Community Organisations, listed below: First Step Sports, Girls Brigade-Boulevard, GUTS-Growing Up Together Safely, Hamshaw Court Residents, HERAC - Arthritis Care, Hessle Road Network, Horse Riding for the Disabled, Hull All Blacks Rugby, Hull Belly Dance, Hull Boys' Club, Hull Darts School of Excellence, Hull Saints- Boxing Club, Hull Youth For Christ, Maurice Rawling Misfits, NaSA Activity Club, Scrapstore , It was a privilege to help them. The remaining £10,000 was allocated to a joint venture with Wooden Spoon (a charity, which helps young people into sport). These sums totalling £20,000 in cash and £20,000 in kind will establish a project which will be led by Hull F.C. Super League, to deliver training to young people in Rugby League and Boxing. The name of the project is The ACE Project - Aspire. Commit. Enjoy. Over the next year it will deliver training sessions through links with Hull FC Super League, the Fish Trades Boxing Club and the Hessle Road Network. All the training will be by qualified coaches, and stars of Rugby and Boxing will assist. The Pram Race Trust are grateful to Jason Leonard (England and R.F.U. player) for walking Hadrian's Wall to provide the £10,000 from Wooden Spoon. These are exciting times and many people have helped to make all these things possible. There is still much to do and we have great plans, and are already aware that this year's pram race is set to be bigger than ever. Again, Wooden Spoon has indicated support and a contribution towards the new Hessle Road Network, Young People's Centre at St Johns Newington. “To all those who have given of their time or generously helped re-establish the Pram Race; I wish to record on behalf of the Trust, and my fellow trustees our grateful appreciation”
